Research has shown that 80 percent of the people who make New Year's resolutions fail to keep them. Why ? The main reason is lack of motivation. When difficulties arise on their way to making their resolutions a reality, most people quit. They quit because they do not have the habits or system they can fall back on , that can make them resilient enough to be successful.
Are you prepared to form the habits that will help to become more effectivet ? If you are , then you are ready to never stop improving. This means you are prepared to live a life in which you stop complaining about your bad breaks and how others have taken advantage of you, and left you with the crumbs in life.
Don’t assume that some people are living the kind of great life you would like to live because they were born with a streak of luck. Don't get me wrong! Getting a break is helpful. Being blessed is important, but the ability to take advantage of your opportunities depends on your ability to take the took action that will help you to form good habits. While this is a simple prospect most people find it difficult to persevere in repeating a task or productive activity until it becomes a habit. They forget that the more you do something the easier it becomes. You stop viewing it as a chore and accept it as part of your normal routine.
When you repeat something you are creating a new routine. When your new routine becomes second nature, then you have formed a good habit. A giood new habit that helps you to get more things done will help make becoming better or improving a never ending proposition! This doesn’t always have to take that long either. If you are determined to form a new habit you can do so in as little as 21 days.
Another ingredient to help you form and keep your good habits is that of motivation. You require motivation to develop willpower and to stay disciplined. There are many modes of motivation. You may be told by your doctor that unless you quit smoking you will develop lung cancer. Or if you don’t change your diet you will most likely suffer a heart attack. You also be told that if you don't stop drinking you will become homeless. This type of motivation can be viewed almost as a threat.
The other type of motivation is when you have the desire to change, it comes from deep within you. Once you have this type of motivation your willpower and discipline levels will increase. As you start your journey you will find that nothing can stop you, you are totally focused on your end goal. That is forming a new, lifelong habit. This type focus requires a change in mindset.
What type of mindset do you have? Do you always feel down and out? Then it is time to change your mindset. You need to start thinking in a more positive way, learn to look on the bright side and stop being so negative. One of the keys to relentless improvement is developing a growth mindset.
According to Carol Dweck, a renowned psychologist, a fixed mindset person believes that his or her basic qualities, like talent and intelligence, are fixed and cannot be improved. A person with a growth mindset believes that qualities like talent and intelligence can be improved. Fixed mindset people believe that talent alone creates success without effort. It is like believing that you are either born great or you are not.
According to E.D. Hirsch people are called “great” in history either due to their brilliance or because they affected or influenced the lives of many people by the changes they made to the world or their communities through their lives. Abraham Lincoln was one person who was born in modest means who proved to be tough enough to be great through adequate preparation, self-discipline and persistence. This means he never stopped improving irrespective of his situation or circumstance! Are you prepared to do the same?
Fortunately we do not all have to be great in history, we can simply live great lives by doing our brilliant best to become the best versions of ourselves while helping to make ourselves, families, friends and communities better than we found them. Research has shown that those with a growth mindset know that through the application of different strategies, like getting inputs from others, reading, and persistence in action, they can improve and change from average to great. If you want to become the best version of yourself you have to identify your strengths and weaknesses, the process or method that works best for you, and relentlessly seek to improve without ceasing.
One factor that can affect your ability to form the habits that can help you to never stop improving is stress. This is why in the Dala Compass Academy we offer a free course on stress management.
