How do you deal with stress and conflict everyday? Do you have to deal with conflict at home or at work? Don’t fight fire with fire. Don’t get into a shouting match with your child, co-worker, wife or husband. Stress and conflict can affect your mindset, thoughts, anxiety patterns and health. If you doubt what I am saying, check your blood pressure when you are stressed out. When you cut down on conflicts and stress you you will enjoy better health.
One skill that you will need to become a better manager of conflicts is learning to decide when to engage and when to disengage. It is hard to have a conflict all by yourself. When someone starts arguing with you but you do not speak back or you simply agree with them, it is hard for the conflict to grow. You must have the ability to listen to yourself and to others so that you can understand the potential metacommunications that could lead to conflict.
Ask yourself questions when talking to others. What is the goal of your interaction? Do you know the 5 commonest health risks or illnesses for your age group? What is the outcome you are looking for in your interaction with others? How will that outcome affect your health or productivity? Demanding respect from your teenager son or mother-in-law will only lead to conflict and increase in your blood pressure. On the other hand, when you remind yourself that you can't make others behave exactly the you want, you will learn to develop the strategies and conversational guide rails for better health. Once you do this, you can then make the decision on how you will deal with the situation.
You also have to learn to avoid turning a negative situation into a battle, where the last one standing is declared the winner. This approach leads to resentments after the fact that can be carried over to future encounters. Aim to have a strategic goal of keeping yourself stress-free and conflict free during your daily interactions with others. Why is this important? It will help you cut down on conflicts and enjoy better health today. This is part of the process of relentless self-mastery and holistic wellness.
